We took our very first trip to Kennywood recently, it was a spur of the moment idea and we didn't do much research about what to expect or how to get the most of visit.
Giant Eagle has discount tickets available but I believe they are only for weekday visits. For weekend visits, purchasing your tickets online will save you a few dollars.
Parking *is* free but there are a limited amounts of spaces available. Unless you arrive early, plan on paying $7 for parking.
There is a McDonalds, A&W/Long John Silvers and Dollar General nearby. Your bag will be searched but there doesn't seem to be many restrictions. Later in our visit, we left the park and ate some lunch at our car, just get your handstamped as you leave.
My daughter wore flip flops and was unable to ride the paratroopers as they thought her shoes might fall off.
There are lots of shady spots to sit and rest or wait for the rest of your party.
The Pittsburgh Plunge- Simple "log ride" but you WILL get wet riding, you WILL get wet watching. There are a couple Body Dryers in the park $5 a pop.
Garfield's Nightmare- Indoor boat ride, tunnel of love style, guests get 3D glasses to experience Garfield the cat's nightmare.
$7 for this Dippin' Dots!
We avoided Kiddie land at first thinking that at 8 & 10, the kids were too big but they enjoyed the plunge ride, the Phantom Jr, crazy trolley.
Kidddie land also features a dinosaur dig sand pit and a private infant nursing area
The Skycoaster (a 1-3 person bungee ride) is an additional cost as is the paddle boats.
Other ride reviews
Ghostwood Estate -Indoor ride, "Haunted mansion" style. Ride carriages are equipped with guns and guests asked to shot the ghosts/goblins/spooks. Your shots will activate their movement. My 8 year old daughter hated it, while I wanted to ride it again to take in all the scenery without shooting at stuff.
Exterminator-Indoor roller coaster, pretty dark, not too hilly but lots of jerks, turns, twists
Noah's Ark - A walk thru fun house, some spots require you to walk over skeletons and climb down stairs while the boat is rocking
