The Lyrids are a meteor shower lasting from April 16 to April 26 each year.
The peak will be occurring on April 22, 2013 (night of the 22nd/morning of the 23rd). The Lyrids, which appear to originate in the portion of the sky that features the constellation Lyra, are usually are a good show, for those inclined to stay awake late enough to see them at their best. They average about 10-20 meteors an hour when seen from a dark rural area, but are known to occasionally feature large bursts of activity, with peaks sometimes as high as 100 meteors an hour.
